KNOW YOUR CONSUMER RIGHTS
It's hard to be a smart consumer today. You think about the products you buy and the amount you can spend. Can I afford this? Is this the best buy? Am I getting my money's worth. Consumers have rights and responsibilities in the marketplace.
PAY ONLY FOR THE PRODUCT AND NOT THE PACKAGING
When you buy apples in a plastic bag, you should only pay for the weight of the apples. If you buy potato salad at the deli counter, you should only pay for the salad, not the weight of the container. When you buy meat wrapped in the store, you should only pay for the meat, not the wrapping, tissue, soak pads, the label, or the tray. The wrappings, tissue, soak pads, and label is TARE.
In many stores, the electronic or computerized scales used a the check-out counter are set to automatically deduct the weight of the packaging. On other scales, the sales clerk must adjust the scale to deduct the packaging materials. If the packaging material is placed on the scale without the contents, the scale should always read ZERO.
